Gerald Brenan

(1894-1987), Writer and Hispanic scholar

Sitter in 3 portraits
Hispanophile author. During the First World War, Brenan fought in the Ypres salient, on the Somme, and in the Battle of the Marne. He won the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre. He first became associated with Bloomsbury through Roger Fry. Through Ralph Partridge, with whom he served during the war, he met Carrington and Lytton Strachey. He lived in Spain from 1919 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and then permanently from 1953. His works include The Spanish Labyrinth (1945) and two volumes of autobiography (1962, 1974).
