Ivor Brown

(1891-1974), Drama critic and writer

Sitter associated with 10 portraits
After leaving university, Brown was a conscientious objector in World War I. He worked for the Manchester Guardian from 1919 until 1935. His reaction to experimental theatre after the war made him, according to one critic, 'the most influential and perceptive voice in British dramatic criticism'. Brown's relationship with the Observer started in 1929 and he was the paper's editor from 1942 until 1948. His writing included editorials and sports columns but drama criticism was his speciality. He published numerous books, including Dickens in His Time, Shakespeare, Shakespeare in His Time, How Shakespeare Spent the Day, The Way of My World, Chosen Words and Shaw in His Time.
