Sir Richard Browne, 1st Baronet was of low birth, and worked as a wood monger. He joined Cromwell's army in 1644 and fought on the Parliamentarian side during the civil wars. Browne became an MP in 1645, and was Sheriff of the City of London and Alderman of the City of London from 1648 to 1649. Disillusioned with the protectorate, he was one of those who called for the return of the monarchy. He met Charles II at the head of his triumphal procession into London in 1660; the king rewarded him for this action by knighting him and making him a baronet. Browne was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1660.
