Thomas Chalmers
(1780-1847), First Moderator of the Free ChurchSitter in 10 portraits
Chalmers was ordained as a minister in 1803. After reading Wilberforce's Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System (1797), he adopted the evangelical position. His evangelical preaching made him famous in Glasgow. In 1823, he took the Chair of Moral Philosophy at St. Andrews University, later becoming Professor of Divinity at Edinburgh University. He gained recognition as a leader of the Evangelical party in the Church of Scotland, who desired independence for the Church. The conflict led to the Disruption of 1843, when a group of 203 commissioners walked out of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Chalmers was made Moderator of the new Free Church of Scotland.
