Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook
(1814-1906), Politician, Home Secretary and Secretary of State for War; ex-officio Trustee of the National Portrait GallerySitter in 29 portraits
Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook, was a Conservative politician who held office in every Tory government between 1858 and 1892. He served as Home Secretary (1867-8) and as Secretary of War (1874-8). His guiding principle was loyalty to his party and his leaders: by this loyalty he aimed to serve his country, his church, his class, his empire, and his queen; his attachment to all was very strong, and few things in politics gave him more satisfaction than his long association with Queen Victoria, who treated him as a trusty servant.
