A portrait painter, Dahl first came to England from Sweden in 1682 and was for many years Kneller's chief rival. He worked for the Duke of Somerset, painting the Petworth 'Beauties' in the late 1690s, and for Queen Anne and her husband, completing a set of Admirals, c.1702-8 (now at Greenwich).
