Charles John Darling, 1st Baron Darling

(1849-1936), Judge

Sitter in 12 portraits
A staunch Unionist, he had taken Edward Carson, who became the leader of the Ulster Unionists into his chambers when the latter moved from the Irish to the English Bar. Darling was a Conservative Unionist MP before becoming a Circuit judge, and his appointment to the High Court Bench in 1897 was objected to on the grounds that he had given 'no sign of legal eminence'.
