Charles Dartiquenave was a member of the Kit-Cat Club. He was connected with many prominent men in politics and London society, and was noted for his keen wit and love of fine food. His friend, the writer Jonathan Swift, described him as 'the greatest punner of this town next to myself' and 'the man who knows everything, and that everybody knows'.
