In 1786, de Grey succeeded his father as 3rd Baron Grantham of Grantham, and on the death of his maternal aunt in 1833, he became 2nd Earl de Grey. A moderate Tory, he supported Catholic emancipation in the 1820s. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty (1834-5) and was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1841, a post he held for four years. De Grey was colonel commandant of the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment of Cavalry for over forty years, and was an aide-de-camp to William IV and Queen Victoria, Earl de Grey was the first president of the Institute of British Architects, from 1834 until his death in 1859. He designed Wrest House on his Wrest Park estate in Bedfordshire.
