A writer and historian, D'Israeli came to prominence through his Curiosities of Literature, a collection of anecdotes about historical persons and events, unusual books, and the habits of book collectors. It sold widely, going through many editions. D'Israeli's reputation was founded on his talent for popularising literary and historical research and his historical works were held in high esteem, in particular An Enquiry into the Literary and Political Character of James I (1816) and Commentaries on the Life and Reign of Charles I (1828-30). His books were seen as exciting introductions to areas of knowledge and speculation. He was the father of Benjamin Disraeli, British prime minister from 1874 to 1880.
