Sitter in 15 portraits
The eldest son of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault, Edward, Prince of Wales died one year before his father and so the crown passed to his second son, Richard II. He became popularly known as 'the Black Prince' after his death, in reference to the suit of black armour that he was thought to have worn at the Battle of Crécy.
