Thomas Faed
(1826-1900), Genre painterLater Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter in 19 portraits
While still a student Faed was a successful exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibitions and in recognition of this he was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy at the young age of twenty-three. He moved to London three years later, where he had much success as a domestic genre painter. His 1855 painting, The Mitherless Bairn, portraying an orphan child being taken in by poor cottagers, was a great success in its day, appealing as it did to Victorian sentimentality. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1861, and was elevated to the rank of Academician in 1864.
