Scottish patriot. Forbes studied law in Edinburgh and Leyden and supported the Union of the English and Scottish Parliaments (1707) and Sir Robert Walpole's policy in Scotland. Lord Advocate (1725) and Lord President of the Court of Session (from 1737). He enforced, with General Wade, the act of disarming the highlanders and raised troops against Prince Charles Stuart in 1745.
