Born at Agra, India and educated at several British public schools; in 1892 he travelled to New York and spent the following two years working in a sequence of jobs; on his return home to India he managed fifty miles of tramway and became a traffic superintendent for the Rohilkhand and Kumaon Railway; in 1904 Geddes joined the North Eastern Railway (NER) in Britain, rising to the position of deputy general manager in 1911; during the early years of the First World War Geddes held the positions of director-general of transportation in France and director-general of military railways at the War Office, as well as the rank of major-general; he departed as the last businessman-in-government in 1921.
