Sitter in 11 portraits
Irish-born author and playwright. Though awkward in manner, he was a much loved member of the Club, and Johnson saved him from debtor's prison by selling his novel The Vicar of Wakefield in 1762. His best-known comedy is She Stoops to Conquer, 1773.
