Francis Carruthers Gould was born on 2 December 1844, in Barnstaple, Devon. After working in banking and stockbroking, his skill in caricature was recognised and from 1897 he gained regular employment as a political cartoonist. His caricatures were published in Truth, the Pall Mall Gazette (1897-3) and Westminster Gazette (1893-1914) where he became assistant editor. He also edited his own periodical Picture Politics (1894-1914).
