Mary Ann Everett Green (née Wood)

Esteemed for her scholarly Lives of the Princesses (1849-55), which covered the period from the Norman Conquest to the daughters of Charles I, Green was chosen by the government as the first editor of the Calendar of State Papers, a monumental project to record historical government documents. From 1856 until her death, Green edited over forty 'calendars', covering reigns including Elizabeth I and Charles II, and her knowledge of ancient papers was described as 'truly wonderful'. In 1845 she married the artist George Pycock Green, and together they had four children.
