A British Whig politician. He held office under four Prime Ministers: Lord Melbourne, Lord John Russell, Lord Aberdeen, and Lord Palmerston, and served three times as Home Secretary. Grey trained in the law, and was called to the Bar in 1826. He began a successful legal practice but turned instead to politics. He entered Parliament in 1832, and quickly made his mark in the House of Commons. As well as Home Secretary, Grey held a number of other senior offices including Secretary of State for the Colonies and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In total, he spent fourteen years as Home Secretary, and was described as 'Prime Minister in all internal affairs'.
