John Hall

John Hall was a pupil, first of engraver William Wynne Ryland, and then of the French immigrant engraver Simon François Ravenet. In 1756 and 1761, he won prizes from the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Hall became a fellow of the Society of Artists in 1765 and was three times elected director, in 1768, 1769 and 1771. He engraved a number of significant portraits, including one of Richard Brinsley Sheridan by Joshua Reynolds. His studio also handled the plates for Bell's British Theatre with scenes by Hall and portraits of actors in character by Thornthwaite and Reading.
