Sitter in 46 portraits
An Irish army officer and politician, Hastings was widely commended for his bravery during the American War of Independence (1775-83). On his return to Ireland in 1781, he was captured by the French army but was soon after released in Paris in a prisoner exchange. After returning to Britain, Hastings became the close friend of the Prince Regent and a supporter of Irish Catholic relief. In 1812, he was appointed governor-general of India but resigned nine years later due to his implication in a financial scandal.
