Sir Philip Hendy
(1900-1980), Art historian; Director of the National GallerySitter in 12 portraits
Began his career in art administration in 1923 as an Assistant Keeper and lecturer at the Wallace Collection in London, despite his having no formal training in art history. He then spent three years in Italy compiling the Gardner Museum catalogue, after which he was made Curator of Paintings at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Returning to Britain, he was appointed director of the Leeds City Art Gallery in 1934. He undertook the task of relocating the gallery's collection to protect it during World War II. His work moving and rehanging the paintings so impressed the Director of the National Gallery, Kenneth Clark, that in 1946 Hendy was appointed as his successor. He held this post for twenty-one years.
