Christopher William Bradshaw Isherwood

Began writing as a student at Cambridge and is best known for Mr Norris Changes Trains (1935) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939) which reflected his experience of living in pre-war Germany. The latter was adapted by John Kander and Fred Ebb into the stage musical Cabaret(1968) and in 1972 into the film staring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles. Isherwood subsequently settled near Hollywood and worked as a scriptwriter. His American novels include Down There on a Visit (1962), A Single Man (1964) and Christopher and His Kind (1977) a frank account of the homosexual affairs of his youth. His Diaries 1939-1960 were published in 1996.
