Alexander Keith
(1791-1880), Writer on prophecySitter in 3 portraits
A Free Church of Scotland minister, Keith established his reputation through the Evidence of the Truth of the Christian Religion from the Fulfilment of Prophecy (1823) designed as a refutation of the naturalist philosophy of David Hume. The book was widely translated, and became an enormously popular and influential work of the time. His reputation as 'Prophecy Keith' led to him forming part of the Church of Scotland's mission of inquiry to the Jews, which was dispatched to the Holy Land in 1839. Keith retired from pastoral work on his return to Scotland, but he was convener of the Jewish Mission Committee in the Church of Scotland and in the Free Church of Scotland.
