Charles Kingsley
(1819-1875), Novelist, Church of England clergyman and controversialistSitter in 47 portraits
Novelist and divine; ordained, 1842, and soon became associated with Christian Socialist movement; published tracts and novels, including Yeast, 1848, and Alton Lock, 1850, promoting Christian Socialism; appointed Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, 1860, and published The Water Babies, 1863. Often the centre of controversy, Kingsley nevertheless gained both public and royal approval in his later years.
