A leading engraver and antiquary, who lobbied for members of his profession to receive full membership of the Royal Academy. Landseer was apprenticed to William Byrne, a leading engraver, and his first works were vignettes after paintings by Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg for Thomas Macklin's edition of the Bible. In a series of lectures given at the Royal Institution in 1806, Landseer expounded his theory that engraving was 'sculpture by incision'. He is best remembered for nurturing the early career of his son, Sir Edwin Landseer 'with zeal and discretion'.
