George Lansbury
(1859-1940), Pacifist and politician; Labour leader and MP for Bow and BromleySitter in 32 portraits
Lansbury was the founder and editor of the Daily Herald, a rallying point for opponents of the First World War, supporters of the Russian Revolution and, later, critics of the Labour leadership. An active supporter of the Suffragette movement, he ran for parliament on the single issue of giving women the right to vote. Lansbury led the Party after the split caused by Macdonald's formation of a National Government from 1931 to 1935. An ardent believer in unilateral disarmament, he visited Hitler in 1937 to make a plea for peace.
