John Maitland, Duke of Lauderdale
(1616-1682), Scottish politician and supporter of Charles IISitter in 24 portraits
An important Restoration politician, Lauderdale was Secretary of State for Scotland from 1660 to 1680, and had almost absolute power there. He was a member of the Cabal ministry, but took little interest in English affairs. Created a Duke in 1672, he was a cultivated but unprincipled and unattractive man.
