Charles Jenkinson, 1st Earl of Liverpool, was a leading MP during the early years of George III's reign. He was sympathetic to the new King's political interests and was a supporter of Lord Bute for whom he served as under-secretary between 1761 and 1763. He was appointed Lord of the Treasury in the Grafton administration in 1767. Jenkinson was appointed President of the Board of Trade in 1786. His son, Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, was Prime Minister from 1812 to 1827.
