Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 6th Marquess of Londonderry

(1852-1915), Viceroy of Ireland

Sitter in 12 portraits
Vane-Tempest was made MP for the Irish seat of County Down in 1878, but left the Commons in 1884 on the death of his father when he entered the House of Lords as Earl Vane. He was appointed Viceroy of Ireland in 1886 where he proved himself a staunch Unionist and supporter of property rights. He held a number of political offices including Postmaster General and President of the Board of Education, but after 1906 he devoted himself to the Irish Unionist cause. He was one of the most prominent critics of the third Home Rule Bill, and the most vocal Unionist in the House of Lords. In 1913, he presided over the Ulster Unionist Council meeting that brought about the creation of a provisional government in Ulster.
