Banker and inventor, Miller made a fortune through the rapid economic expansion of Glasgow during the second half of the eighteenth century. He moved from trade to banking and attained the office of deputy governor of the Bank of Scotland, 1790. An early admirer and patron of the poet Robert Burns, in later life he devoted himself to agriculture, ordnance and ship design. In 1788, he worked alongside the engineer William Symington to design the world's first steam-propelled boat, an important milestone of the Industrial Revolution.
