'Monty', as he was nicknamed, served during the First and Second World Wars. He was awarded the DSO after the first Battle of Ypres in 1914, in which he had been left for dead, and continued in active service on the Somme and at Passchendaele. In 1942 he took command of the Eighth Army, and at El Alamein in North Africa he secured victory over General Rommel. He commanded Allied ground forces during the invasion of German-occupied Western Europe, launched in June 1944.
