George Moore
(1852-1933), NovelistSitter in 8 portraits
Born in Ireland, he moved to France where he studied painting and published his first book of verse, Flowers of Passion, in 1878. In 1880 he moved to London where he published several novels. He was art critic of The Speakerand the author of Modern Painting (1893). He returned to Ireland in 1899 where he became involved in the development of the Irish National Theatre and published two collections of short stories. He is credited as the first English novelist to break away from the content, structure, techniques, and style of the Victorian novelists towards a more naturalistic realism. His short stories influenced the early writings of James Joyce.

The sketch of George Moore that you attribute to Sir Lesley Ward was actually done by Walter Sickert. If you check other sketches by Sickert in your collection, you will see that he signs them Sic.
