Herbert Stanley Morrison, Baron Morrison of Lambeth

(1888-1965), Politician; Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister

Morrison was elected to a succession of influential positions in local government, starting with Mayor of Hackney in 1920, and membership of the London County Council in 1922. He entered parliament during the first Labour government of 1924 as MP for South Hackney. Minister of Transport in Ramsay Macdonald's 1929 government; member of Churchill's War Cabinet (1942-5); as Home Secretary and Minister of Home Security (1940-5) created the National Fire Service; Foreign Secretary (1951) under Clement Attlee. He retired in 1959 and accepted a life peerage. Entering the House of Lords as Baron Morrison of Lambeth, he fought to stop the abolition of the London County Council, dying in 1969.
