Scottish-born Murray enjoyed a prestigious career as a General and statesman. He had distinguished himself as quartermaster-general during the British campaigns against Napoleon's forces in Egypt in 1800. He served with the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War From 1809 to 1814 and, after Wellington, was the most respected soldier of his time in Britain.
