Sir Dudley North was a merchant and economist, born in London in 1641. He became famous as a successful businessman, public servant and economist. In 1658, through his father’s instruction, he became an apprentice trader working across Russia and the Eastern Mediterranean. North travelled extensively in this role and spent much time in Constantinople, now Istanbul. After establishing a significant fortune, he moved back to London where he began financing other trading projects. This included investments in the East India Company, which traded in India, and the Royal African Company, which traded enslaved Africans across the Atlantic.
