(1771-1806), Explorer

Regency Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 2 portraits
One of the many explorers of the African interior, Park was the first European to reach, and travel along the river Niger. He published an account of this in Travels in the Interior of Africa (1799). After returning to chart the Niger's course from rise to estuary, to report on the town of Timbuctoo, Park drowned in 1805, an estimated 500 miles from the river's end.
