Elizabeth Pepys(1640-1669), Wife of Samuel Pepys
Sitter in 4 portraits
Elizabeth de St. Michel married Samuel Pepys when she was only fourteen years of age, not an uncommon practice in the seventeenth century. Their early years together were marked by ill health and lack of money. The diary records both his enduring love for his wife, together with their regular quarrels, and his many infidelities with serving women, market stall holders, tradesmen's wives and even their own maid. Much to their regret the couple never bore children. Elizabeth died aged 29, just months after Pepys ceased his diary.
