A prolific portrait painter, completing over 700 portraits, Phillips displayed his talent soon after arriving in London in 1790 by exhibiting his first work at the Royal Academy two years later. Moving from history painting to portraits, he was elected to the Royal Academy in 1808 and was Professor of Painting there between 1825 and 1832. He painted a series of contemporary poets. He also produced a number of portraits of men and women of science, considering both to represent the creativity of the Romantic period.
