Early Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 3 portraits
Edward Herbert was born Edward Clive. He was the son of Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis and his wife Henrietta Antonia Herbert. In 1804, when his father inherited the earldom, he became Viscount Clive. In 1806, he became MP for Ludlow, retaining the seat until he himself became earl. In 1807 he took the surname and arms of Herbert, in accordance with the will of his mother's brother. Herbert played a leading role in the suppression of the Chartist riots of 1839. In 1847, he stood for election as chancellor of the University of Cambridge, but was defeated by only 120 votes by Albert, Prince Consort. He died at Powis Castle after being accidentally shot by one of his sons, the Hon. Robert Charles Herbert.
