Nicholas Ridley

(1500-1555), Bishop of London

Sitter in 28 portraits
As one of Thomas Cranmer's chaplains Ridley began to reject some Roman Catholic doctrines. He became Bishop of Rochester in 1547 and Bishop of London in 1550 and he committed himself to the reform of religion. In an attempt to ensure a Protestant succession, following the death of Edward VI, he denounced Mary I and Princess Princess Elizabeth as illegitimate, and supported Lady Jane Grey. On Mary's accession he was sent to the Tower, declared a heretic and burnt at the stake in Oxford.
