Born in Hartlepool, Romaine was a popular clergyman and evangelical preacher. Attracting controversy for his sermons he held several appointments in London before his final position at St Anne, Blackfriars from 1766-95. A prolific author on Christian spirituality his works include The Triumph of Faith, 1795.
