Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury

(1621-1683), Statesman

Sitter in 20 portraits
In the English Civil Wars Ashley-Cooper had fought for King Charles I and then later for Parliament, but at the Restoration he was pardoned by King Charles II and became an influential politician. A supporter and patron of John Locke and a defender of civil liberties, he had nevertheless acquired a joint share in a sugar plantation in Barbados and a small share in the slave ship the Rose. He was created Earl of Shaftesbury and appointed Lord Chancellor in 1672. He favoured the Duke of Monmouth’s claim to the throne over the Catholic James, Duke of York, and gained political ground briefly in the wake of the 'Popish plot' (1679-81). After that he fell from favour so dramatically that he was forced to flee to the Netherlands in 1682.
