William Somerville

Trained as a surgeon and entered the Army in 1795, he accompanied Sir James Henry Craig's expedition to the Cape of Good Hope that year, and became Garrison Surgeon of Cape Town on its capture by the British. He made several confidential missions in South Africa. In 1805, Somerville went with Craig's expedition to the Mediterranean that was part of operations against Napoleon. When Craig became Governor-in-Chief of Canada in 1807, Somerville joined him as Inspector-General of Hospitals. In 1812, he married his cousin, Mary Greig, who became better known as the scientist and mathematician Mary Somerville. From then on, he concentrated his efforts on furthering his wife's career.
