John Roddam Spencer Stanhope
(1829-1908), Pre-Raphaelite painterSitter in 1 portrait
After graduating from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1851, Spencer Stanhope became a captain in the West Yorkshire militia. He took up painting as a pupil of G. F. Watts, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1859. After 1880, he lived in Florence where he painted frescoes in the Anglican church, as well as in Marlborough College chapel and the Oxford Union. Stanhope was strongly influenced by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a close friend to pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. After his death, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Carfax Gallery. The catalogue was written by his friend William de Morgan, whose novel An Affair of Dishonour (1910) was dedicated to Stanhope.
