Arthur Penrhyn Stanley

(1815-1881), Dean of Westminster; son of Edward Stanley; Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery

Sitter in 30 portraits
Stanley was the leading liberal theologian of his time in England. A pupil at Rugby School, he was tutored and profoundly influenced by the headmaster, Thomas Arnold. When Arnold died in 1842, his widow asked Stanley to act as biographer. The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, published in 1844, is considered Stanley's greatest work. From 1843 until 1851 he was a fellow and tutor at University College, Oxford. He left to become Canon of Canterbury Cathedral. He was appointed Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford, the chair being attached to a canonry at Christ Church. In 1864 he was installed as Dean of Westminster, a position he held until his death.
