Although educated at home, Agnes Strickland benefited from her father's belief that girls should have the same education as boys. In 1840, she embarked on the nine-volume historical work Lives of the Queens of England. Although co-written with her sister Elizabeth, it was agreed that Agnes would appear as author on all their publications. Their pioneering research was guided by the motto, 'facts not opinions'. The Lives provided inspiration for historians and writers of historical fiction.
