William Symington

Although his parents intended for him to enter the ministry, Symington chose instead to become an engineer. He joined his brother, an engineer in the Wanlockhead mines, and assisted him in constructing the new engine supplied by Boulton and Watt to drain the mine. He rose to become manager for the mines at Kinnaird and an adviser to other mine owners. Symington experimented for many years, with varying degrees of success, with designs for a steam-propelled paddleboat.
