Despite sculpture traditionally being associated with male artists, Thornycroft became extremely successful. She specialised in portraits of children, which led to her appointment as royal sculptor. She gave lessons to Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Louise, who became an accomplished amateur sculptor herself.
