Arnold Joseph Toynbee
(1889-1975), Historian and nephew of Arnold ToynbeeSitter in 12 portraits
Director of Studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) from 1925 until 1955 and co-editor of the RIIA's annual Survey of International Affairs. Toynbee worked for British Intelligence during World War I and served as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. During World War II, he again worked for the Foreign Office and attended the post-war peace talks. The publication of an abridgement of the first six volumes of his A Study of History in 1946 earned him a level of public recognition not matched by any other historian of his time. His influence was short lived however, and his work gradually faded from view.
