George Macaulay Trevelyan
(1876-1962), Historian, public educator and conservationist; son of Sir George Otto TrevelyanSitter in 12 portraits
A great-nephew of the historian Lord Macaulay, in his time Trevelyan was the most widely read and admired of living British historians, a master of narrative and descriptive style. His reputation rests largely on a trilogy on Garibaldi (1907-11), England Under Queen Anne (1930-4) and English Social History (1944). Although much of his academic career was spent in Cambridge, he recognised the university's restrictions and for a time lectured at the Working Men's College in Bloomsbury. During the First World War he raised and commanded an ambulance unit on the Italian front.
